Shopify offers different pricing categories, with Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus being the most common choices for merchants.

At Code we see many Shopify merchants making an early switch to Shopify Plus, at a yearly revenue of 1 or 2 million euros. At that point, Shopify Plus is still more expensive than other Shopify subscriptions. Why do these merchants go for it anyway?

So, what is the pricing of Shopify Plus? The simple answer: its monthly fee is 0.35% (3-year contract) or 0,40% (1-year contract) of your revenue, with a minimum of $2,300 (3-year contract) or $2,500 (1-year contract).

Is your revenue less than $657.143 a month? Then Shopify Plus costs $2,300 a month with a 3-year contract. Do you turn over more than $657.143 a month? Then a Shopify Plus plan costs 0.35% of your revenue.

In addition to your monthly base fee, Shopify calculates a variable fee. With Shopify Plus you pay a commission of 0.20% of your revenue (unless you use Shopify Payments). Now this is where it gets interesting for existing Shopify merchants: that 0.20% is well below the 0.60% commission you would pay with a Shopify Advanced subscription.

The tipping point where Shopify Plus is cheaper than Shopify Advanced

Hence, there is a tipping point at which you can claim all the advantages of Shopify Plus, at the same cost as Shopify Advanced.

So where is this tipping point, you ask? That depends on a few factors, such as your revenue, how many storefronts you have, and if you use a Payment Service Provider like Mollie or Shopify Payments (because they charge transaction costs).
